Store Planning and Design has had many challenges as well as triumphs in the last 30 years during my tenure. Whether you are considering big box or conventional retail or a smaller, more curated retail experience, the expectations and environments have changed considerably. Demographic and market studies will continue to be incremental resources in those initial steps of determining project feasibility and schematic design, but recognizing those market differentiators as well as appealing personally to your target market are keys to reviving that interest and excitement with the bricks-and-mortar retail experience. While this is certainly a challenge in recognizing traits and bridging gaps between different generations, this is also the most exciting and engaging aspect of store design and development.
