About Larry Shanahan

I've been tinkering with computers since the 8-bit home computer days. Although I began my working career in human services, I found ways to leverage my computer knowledge, became the office "computer geek" and learned to build database applications using Microsoft Access. I created a centralized client records database which we marketed to other non-profit organizations.I decided to leave human services and pursue my dream of working in IT full-time. I had several years of short-term contract jobs in the greater Pittsburgh area doing everything from installing monitors to installing and imaging workstations. In 2006 I began work for the VITA-Northrop Grumman partnership as an IT contractor. I was based at the VDOT Northern Virginia Help Desk in Fairfax, but also did desktop support and inventory work for the Dept of Social Services. In less than a year, I was the first non-VITA person hired full-time by Northrop-Grumman for the contract. I provided field support for multiple state government agencies over a four-county area in Western Va.In 2010 I obtained a position with Fisher BioServices supporting the biorepository for the National Cancer Institute at Ft. Detrick. I began with deskside support, but I leveraged the database and programming skills I had learned to develop in-house solutions to business problems using Visual Studio, .NET and Sql Server. I developed a complete database and several applications needed to track monthly labor billing that replaced an inefficient method of gathering and processing data using individual Excel spreadsheets. In 2017 I became the IT Manager at SriSai Biopharmaceuticals LLC., effectively creating the IT department from scratch. I also monitored and maintained several SQL Server 2016 databases that supported in-house inventory software.I am a Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate for SQL 2016 Database Development.

  • Fisher Bioservices
    Desktop Support Specialist
    Fisher Bioservices Jun 2010 - Sep 2016
    Rockville, Md, Us
Full-time IT support for approximately 40 users at the Fisher Bioservices Wedgewood facility in Frederick MD.Some of my accomplishments:Reconfigured the existing Microsoft Access purchase order system to improve performance and usability.Designed and developed a complete front-end/back-end solution to track billable labor using MS Access, C#, .NET Winforms and SQL Server. This replaced an outdated and inefficient system that used 30-40 individual Excel spreadsheets which had to be reconciled. My system used linked Excel workbooks which allowed constant review throughout billing periods to give supervisors insight into their staff activities and leverage metrics.I learned an XML-based translation language for a mission-critical biological sample inventory system. This brought the ability to create and troubleshoot these translations in-house, turning a $300 per hour expense into a $50 per hour revenue source. For my efforts I was nominated for and received a quarterly award for quality improvement. Collaborated closely with Facility Department to procure and implement a cloud-based maintenance and repair tracking solution. Prior to this, maintenance and repair data was tracked manually in ad-hoc spreadsheets and/or databases. Developed a solution to export data from our Labwatch monitoring system into SQL Server. This allowed changes in the monitoring system to be synchronized with various other databases and enabled the creation of a Visio based facility map. This map gave a visual representation of the status of over 600 freezers and storage units in the facility. A similar map had previously been manually maintained in Excel. Forms for the storage units which had to be manually updated could updated electronically, saving hours of labor. The solution was later modified to alert appropriate staff via email when temporarily disabled alarms were not re-activated by the end of the day. Domain Administrator for in-house Windows domain.
