Our work at BCDC is on the forefront of climate change -- our major responsibility is to create a Regional San Francisco Bay Shoreline Adaptation Plan in light of rising sea levels. We are doing so in a voluntary and collaborative way, with an emphasis on conserving Bay resources, spurring economic development, and resolving historical environmental injustices. It's a great and exciting challenge!My entire career has been spent in the public eye. I started as a staff member in the US House of Representatives and the US Senate, managed half of a California Governor's Cabinet, directed a national award-winning corporate philanthropy program specializing in diversity and environmental and energy sustainability programs, and I am now leading a small and innovative state agency. I have found no greater professional satisfaction than that of positively influencing public policy and supporting neighborhood charitable organizations in underserved communities. I served as a gubernatorial appointee as a Commissioner on BCDC for over ten years prior to becoming BCDC's Executive Director. Some of my favorite accomplishments are:* Reinvigorating a scattershot and under-resourced enforcement program to protect the Bay;* Working closely with BCDC's 27 Commissioners to expand their involvement in major policy decisions that affect the health of the Bay, increase public access to the Bay, and expand environmental justice around the Bay;* Enabling a new generation of BCDC leaders who have helped bring our small state agency into the 21st century (at least in some ways); and,* Actively working with leaders in Sacramento and Washington, D.C. to strengthen the Bay's coastal zone management program.Previously:* Having my boss accept two national awards in one day from the Council on Foundations on behalf of two of our charitable programs;* Simplifying the grant application process for our charitable partners while ensuring a higher level of ethical and legal compliance for the company;* Leading a team of committed state employees to develop the initial Strategic Plan for California's Department of Conservation; and,* Co-chairing, as a volunteer, the Finance and Operations Committee of the Board of Directors of Jewish Vocational Services in San Francisco, arguably the most successful nonprofit employment training service in northern California.Specialties: Environmental and natural resources protection; planning and budgeting; philanthropy and grantmaking; planning and budgeting; nonprofit governance;

Executive DirectorSan Francisco Bay Conservation And Development Commission (Bcdc) Aug 2012 - PresentSan Francisco Bay AreaThe San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) is one of the most successful and innovative government agencies in California. Its mission, implemented by its fifty or so dedicated employees, is to protect and enhance San Francisco Bay and to encourage the Bay's responsible use. Before 1965, about 2,300 acres of the Bay were filled annually and only four miles of the Bay shoreline were open to public access. Now, only a few acres are filled annually – all for critical water-oriented needs, and all mitigated – and public access is provided along 200 miles of shoreline. The Bay is larger than it was when BCDC was established and more people can benefit from it.Just as important, opponents of Bay protection in 1965 argued that saving the Bay could be achieved only at the cost of sacrificing economic growth. Contrary to this fear, the Bay Area economy has continued to expand, in part because the Commission has approved billions of dollars of construction and worked with local governments on special area plans to encourage new development. By providing strong support for maritime development, BCDC has helped San Francisco Bay maintain its role as one of the great shipping centers of the world.BCDC has played an important role in restoring Bay wetlands and mudflats, garbage dumps have been made into parks, neglected waterfronts are now heavily used and much enjoyed, and many attractive well-utilized structures grace the Bay shoreline. BCDC plays a critical role in Bay governance by complementing the responsibilities and authorities of other public agencies involved in Bay protection and development. Its large and diverse membership, which includes representatives of virtually everyone who has an interest in the Bay, allows BCDC to serve as a forum at which affected agencies and interests can work together, and the Commission’s decisions often represent a political consensus of what is in the best interest of the Bay. -
Program DirectorCalifornia Building Performance Contractors Association Nov 2010 - Aug 2012I started looking for my next career and position even before the end of a great run at PG&E, After managing the growth of the company's award-winning charitable program for over eleven years, my position was eliminated. However, I was fortunate to find a marvelous position at the California Building Performance Contractors Association, which represents contractors who specialize in providing homeowners with whole house energy efficiency solutions. It was great to be on the side of the angels as we worked with the contractors as they became more technically proficient, learned how to market their skills to homeowners, and helped reduce carbon footprints in your neighborhood! -
Adjunct ProfessorGolden Gate University 2009 - 2012During the past few summers I have taught a required graduate-level course for Integrated Marketing and Communications students in "Public Issues Management." I team-teach the course with a good friend and colleague, Jim Conran. We are proud to announce that course evaluations turned in by our students generally average well above 4.0 on a 5.0 scale. -
Executive Director, Pg&E Corporation FoundationPacific Gas And Electric Company 1999 - Sep 2010I had the best job in the company -- I directed PG&E's national award-winning charitable contributions program, which is part of the Community Relations Department. PG&E invests over $19 million annually in nonprofit organizations, mainly in northern and central California. A large portion of its grants are made in support of environmental and energy sustainability programs. In May 2010, we received two major awards from the national Council on Foundations for programs that my staff and I created and ran. -
