I went to college thinking I wanted to be an engineer; I left college with an engineering degree and a law degree and practiced law for 15 years. The first half or so of my legal career I concentrated on real estate and civil litigation; the second half or so I represented the criminal element, including those with alleged ties to organized crime. I tried a civil case before a jury and won a million dollar verdict; I tried a murder case before a jury, lost, and my client went to prison for life. I still believe to this day that she was innocent. I decided to leave the practice of law and went in to the restaurant and nightclub business with a couple of my clients (does anyone remember Guitars & Cadillacs?). After a year and several thousand dollars later, I was looking for something else to do and answered a one-line “help wanted” ad that said, “Leasing specialist needed. Please call xxx-xxx-xxxx”. That was my entry into the world of wireless communications, going to work for Fluor Daniel Telecom, developing the initial wireless system for Aerial Communications (now T-Mobile) in the Kansas City market. After about a year and half on that project, I and two other guys formed Selective Site Consultants in 1997.
