As a operations supervisor, you have to have a great understanding of the plant process, hydraulics of the plant, distribution system and interconnects, and administrative duties. It is a much more stressful day than when all the concerns were for only what my plant needed at that time. You also have to make sure that you keep the moral of your employees up while following all the policies of the city. You come to work for a job, but you also have to keep in mind that you have to make sure your manager is happy, your council is happy, and over all you are putting out the highest quality product to keep you end user happy.

As an operator in a large city you focus mainly on the plant and distribution system needs. You are specialized in one facet of what running a water plant is all about and you become an authority in what you do. Because working for a smaller utility forces you to move around a lot and do other things from day to day, you aren't able to focus only on what the plants needs are on a micro level. Even though you can become an expert on your plant in a smaller town over time, in a bigger city where an operators job is more focused on just operating, you can become an expert at your plant much faster.

As an operator in a small town, your responsibilities go beyond what they are for a large city like I am with now. As an relief operator at the City of Eden I was also a lab tech, flusher and distribution worker, basic maintenance worker, mechanic, plumber, electrician (helper mainly), and administrator at times. When you work for a small utility like Eden, the pay and benefits are low, so you find your love for the job from the variety hats you had to wear and for me, the people I worked with. Small town utilities have some of the most down to earth people that really make you good at your job and happy to go to work everyday!
