During my 20 years as a trauma and general surgeon, I practiced in a multi-specialty medical group, a solo practice, and a rural health clinic. I held dozens of leadership roles in clinical medicine, from bylaws and physician compensation committees to the Board of Directors of a hospital and medical group, and in organized medicine at the state and county levels. While serving on the Public Policy committees of national health informatics associations, HIMSS and AMIA, I responded to regulatory notices and spoke with members of Congress. I bring a holistic approach to healthcare in every conversation, from the bit level of digital health to the 30,000 foot view of policy in Washington.When I say policy, I mean both legislative and organizational. I focus on the mission-driven goals and not on the constraints. I look at ways to achieve the desired outcomes while minimizing the negative impact of existing limitations, rather than allowing the limitations to narrow the options and define the result. This allows me to think outside of the proverbial box and identify solutions where others may not see any.
