This diverse background, combined with my innate ability to pinpoint problem areas, has endowed me with the essential skills needed to drive organizational improvement and help individuals be more productive in reaching their desired outcomes.

I initiated the World Leadership Institute in Atlanta, Georgia, through a transformation of Quality Ventures Incorporated, giving birth to the rebranded World Leadership Institute. My initial project involved the creation of an innovative organizational assessment program known as Performance Scan, with a particular focus on enhancing organizational alignment. This endeavor also resulted in the authorship of a book, "Strategic Organizational Development – Building Champion Organizations."In September 2003, I relocated to Davenport, Iowa, where I played a pivotal role in the establishment of a new foundation for Palmer College. During this period, my son, James Patten, continued to advance the World Leadership Institute's mission. Subsequently, in January 2010, having completed my work with Palmer, I returned full-time to my role at the World Leadership Institute.

I was invited by the Board of Trustees to return to Palmer College with the aim of propelling it into the next era of institutional excellence. To achieve this, I harnessed the power of Performance Scan tools, our organizational alignment program, and leadership development initiatives developed by the World Leadership Institute. Through the implementation of these strategies, Palmer College established a robust foundation, laid the groundwork for its future, and cultivated an educational leadership team that stands out on a national scale.In my role, I steered the institution through the Performance Scan Process and operational assessment and planning initiatives, effectively addressing current challenges. We then collaborated on shaping a program that would steer us toward our desired future direction. Additionally, I offered guidance and leadership development through our Champion Leadership program. These initiatives, along with others, provided the impetus for Palmer to enhance its operations and chart a more outcome-oriented path forward. During the last two years, I served as Chancellor to ensure a proper transition.

I worked with companies on achieving ISO 9000 Certification. I designed a training program that provided training to employees on how to develop their ISO 9000 material as well as audit the outcomes they developed. This concept of building it in not bolting it on, allowed employees to deal effectively with ISO 9000 requirements in-house rather than using outside consultants, I later was an ISO 9000 Auditor.

Davenport, Iowa Area

My role as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Palmer College was pivotal in spearheading the establishment of a University System connecting the college in Davenport and the one in California, and I successfully achieved this objective. In addition to this, I held comprehensive responsibilities, overseeing all aspects related to finances, facilities, human resources, and various administrative functions.

I was tasked with offering strategic leadership for the radio group consisting of two stations within the Signal Hill group - WOC and KUUL. Recognizing the need for the organization to fortify its market presence, I recommended the acquisition of a station within the market. I actively pursued and successfully integrated this station into the group.Subsequently, when the decision was made to sell the entire station group, I spearheaded the efforts to broker the deal, resulting in a historic sale at a price based on record-breaking times cash flow.

I held the role of designing and overseeing the technical implementation of an expansive educational telecommunications system that spanned an entire school district. This comprehensive system involved the installation of a high-speed fiber optics network that seamlessly connected all campuses to the central downtown hub. Leveraging cutting-edge technology, the system featured numerous innovative applications.One of the notable features of this system included satellite downlinks, and as an integral part of the AAJC Satellite Network, it boasted a satellite uplink capability. This enabled the system to effectively disseminate course materials to other colleges connected to the network, enhancing its reach and impact.

Des Moines, Iowa Area

The General Assembly of the State of Iowa entrusted me with the task of conceptualizing a statewide fiber optics network. In addition to this, I played a pivotal role in formulating and advocating for the legislation required to authorize and secure funding for this network. Throughout this period, I acted as a liaison between the General Assembly, educational institutions, and the public, working to convey a clear understanding of the developing system.To ensure widespread comprehension and participation, I organized and conducted a series of town hall meetings across the state. The end result of these efforts is the Iowa Communications Network (ICN), a functional network that currently interconnects educational institutions and various other organizations across the entire state.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa Area

I was invited to join the Teleconnect Company with the mission of designing and constructing a core fiber optics network. My responsibilities extended to the creation and execution of a comprehensive marketing and sales strategy. I successfully accomplished this project and further secured a partnership with Williams Pipe Line (later known as Wiltel Company) to collaboratively develop the Fiber Midwest Cross.In addition, I oversaw the construction of an additional fiber optics line spanning across northern Iowa. As part of my role, I formulated effective sales strategies and implemented a robust marketing plan to promote the company's offerings.

Des Moines, Iowa Area

I held the position of CEO at Iowa Public Television, where I reported directly to the Board of Directors and had the privilege of serving on the Governor's Cabinet. During my tenure as CEO, I made significant strides in establishing a robust operational foundation and setting a clear course for the network's future.One of the notable achievements during my time as CEO was the development of a framework for a capital campaign. This campaign was subsequently conducted statewide and resulted in the successful raising of approximately $7 million, which went towards the construction of a new facility. This new facility is now fully operational and plays a vital role in the network's activities.Furthermore, I collaborated with the General Assembly to secure funding for the construction of transmission facilities. This strategic move ensured that all residents of Iowa had access to Iowa Public Television programming, enhancing the network's reach and impact.In recognition of my expertise, the Governor appointed me to lead a committee tasked with studying the state's existing data systems and proposing a comprehensive plan for the future utilization of technology. The committee's diligent work culminated in a series of recommendations that were subsequently implemented, further advancing the state's technological landscape.

I spearheaded the conceptualization and creation of the Kirkwood Telecommunications System, a comprehensive initiative that encompassed various components. This system featured on-campus individualized instruction programs, which utilized centralized video distribution for a personalized learning experience. Additionally, it incorporated an interactive two-way microwave interconnect system, facilitating the delivery of instructional content via two-way video to the college's seven counties.As part of my role, I proactively pursued and secured funding through a series of successful grant applications, enabling the construction and operation of this intricate telecommunications system.My professional journey at Kirkwood commenced as an instructor specializing in business and electronics. Over time, I transitioned into administrative roles, further contributing to the institution's growth and development.

Before my tenure at Kirkwood Community College, my professional journey included a role in the realm of commercial broadcasting at WMT-TV in Cedar Rapids. Furthermore, until 1972, I managed a phonograph record company that had its origins in my high school years, dating back to its establishment in 1958. This company specialized in the production of phonograph records tailored for college, high school, and church musical groups.During my high school years, I supplemented my income by working as a television repair technician. As part of my compensation, I had the opportunity to utilize their office space for the management of my phonograph recording company. Later on, I secured the franchise for Century Records, expanding my business pursuits.Additionally, during my time in Atlanta, I partnered with my son to launch and operate "Looking Glass Productions," a video production company. Looking Glass Productions garnered recognition as the top provider of high-quality video productions for weddings in Atlanta every year.
