In 1995 The Improvement Institute was started to assist parents of elementary age children with questions about parental involvement; how to get involved and stay involved. I read in classrooms to children, assisted my sons teachers in the classroom and spoke to parents about literacy, homework and modeling behaviors for their children. Free publications from the state and federal government were ordered and distributed to area schools and talks were prepared and presented to PTA and PTO organizations throughout Michiana.To fund some of my presentations, I started recycling aluminum and metal items in 2006. Fellow employees realized what I was doing and offered items to me to recycle, and the church we were attending constructed a brand new building and allowed me to recycle the metal cut offs. Church members began to call on me to recycle their metal items, so I started donating money to the food pantry from the proceeds.In 2008, I offered to recycle metal, plastic and cell phones for my son's High School Band Booster Club. Since I was at the Varsity football games watching the half time show, I offered to recycle plastic drink containers. In 2010 an opportunity to recycle paper was presented to me. I was sure that I had enough on my plate and taking on paper was the wrong thing to do.Oh was I wrong! Twelve thousand paper rolls later, over a million children in classrooms and day care centers all over the world have paper for art projects, mother and father's day cards and after school projects. Nothing that I have done since 1995 has helped so many people and saved so much landfill space. I almost said no to the opportunity, "the rest is history" as they say.A new chapter started in June of 2014. The Donation Station - Resource Exchange was formed and my residence as well as my business was moved from South Bend, IN to New Buffalo, MI. This gives me a fresh outlook and the opportunity to make new recycling friends and neighbors.
