The IT department has over 200 employees and an operating budget of over $40 million. Responsible for the following departments:Voice Communications. Maintains all phone systems, voice mail, pagers, cell phones, and security systems. This includes satellite and related disaster recovery systems.Network Engineering. Responsible for all facility networks (LAN), and the interconnected municipal area network (MAN), Guest Networking, related security, and all infrastructure including; Cores, Switches, Firewalls, VPN, cabling, routing, and emergency power systems (generator, UPS).Systems Administration. Responsible for development and support of all corporate applications. Responsible for design and integration of all applications.After joining Checkers, renegotiated service agreements that saved over $400,000 annually, developed an Corporate Applications Development Methodology, wrote the Strategic Information Technology Plan, and initiated numerous business systems development projects.Note: In order to eliminate debt and pay off maturing loans, Checkers decided to sell half of the corporate stores to their franchisees. This reduced the total number of stores from approximately 450 to around 230. What followed was significant reduction in corporate staff to less than 50% of original in order to bring SG&A in line. I left after execution of this downsizing and after receiving the opportunity with EPIX.

Additionally, the team performed the following studies: Store Architecture Evaluation, Client/Server Migration Plan, Infrastructure Architecture Evaluation, LAN Evaluation, CASE Tool Selection, Methodology Selection, and Server back-up strategy study.Note: Eckerd Drug Company outsourced to IBM's ISSC June 1993. Most Information Systems employees, including myself, became ISSC employees on September 1, 1993.

    Managed a task force assigned to evaluate and recommend a new Systems Architecture to support our long-range plan. We evaluated hardware and software in the following categories: EIS/DSS Tools, 4GL GUI builders, Relational Databases (with distributed capabilities), Client Server (distributed data and distributed function) architectures, Information Warehouse architectures, UNIX Servers, TP monitors, and CASE tools. Project leader for numerous development projects centered on redesigning Eckerd's central drug database system. The system, accessed on-line by all 1700 Eckerd pharmacies, contains information about all drugs sold by Eckerd Corporation. All development was completed using COBOL II in an IMS DB/DC environment, with DB2 and DL/I, using Knowledgeware's ADW CASE toolset from analysis through construction. The uses of COBOL II and ADW through construction were firsts for Eckerd Corporation. Over 120 programs and screens were generated using the ADW design and construction tools through three projects.Wrote and taught classes in COBOL II and ADW design through construction. Presented the COBOL II class to the entire development staff (over 100 employees), and the ADW class to twenty developers selected to work on the next wave of CASE projects. All work for this was done after hours on my own time.Installed Eckerd's first systems development LAN. This included two servers running OS/2 LAN Server with MicroFocus/Stingray, ADW, MS Word, and MS Excel.Evaluated and recommended the purchase of the following software for the new systems development LAN, MicroFocus, IEF, ADW, Microsoft Word and Excel. Benchmarked and recommended the purchase of the new development workstations. Several platforms were benchmarked and the COMPAQ 486's with OS/2 2.0 Extended Services was selected and rolled-out to over 100 developers' desktops.
