Responsible for the Technical Services department for HCA Healthcare West Florida Division. HCA Healthcare is the largest hospital chain in the United States with almost 170 hospitals. HCA Healthcare operates 14 divisions, 12 of which are geographically based of which the West Florida division is one. The West Florida Division has 20 hospitals, 17 ambulatory surgery centers, 5 imaging centers, and about 70 Physician practices. The IT department has over 200 employees and an operating budget of over $40 million. Responsible for the following departments:Voice Communications. Maintains all phone systems, voice mail, pagers, cell phones, and security systems. This includes satellite and related disaster recovery systems.Network Engineering. Responsible for all facility networks (LAN), and the interconnected municipal area network (MAN), Guest Networking, related security, and all infrastructure including; Cores, Switches, Firewalls, VPN, cabling, routing, and emergency power systems (generator, UPS).Systems Administration. Responsible for all server hardware and architecture, related security, and all infrastructure including; VM, Citrix, all servers, storage area network (SAN), and emergency power systems (generator, UPS).PACS. Maintains all phone systems, PBXs, the voice mail system, pagers, cell phones, the help desk, store support, desktop support, and the security systems.Systems and Network Operations. Responsible for the corporate network, all servers (NT, Unix, AS400, and Novell), security, and all infrastructure including; RAS, Terminal Server, Firewall, etc.Applications Development. Responsible for development and support of all corporate applications. Including Lawson Financials and Cyborg Payroll systems.Systems Architect. Responsible for design and integration of all applications.After joining Checkers, renegotiated service agreements that saved over $400,000 annually, developed an Corporate Applications Development Methodology, wrote the Strategic Information Technology Plan, and initiated numerous business systems development projects.Note: In order to eliminate debt and pay off maturing loans, Checkers decided to sell half of the corporate stores to their franchisees. This reduced the total number of stores from approximately 450 to around 230. What followed was significant reduction in corporate staff to less than 50% of original in order to bring SG&A in line. I left after execution of this downsizing and after receiving the opportunity with EPIX.

Maintains all PBXs, the voice mail system, the E-mail system, TCP/IP management, firewall support (Firewall/1), network security, and our corporate Internet and Intranet sites.Network Operations. Responsible for the Help Desk, all network components (cabling, routers, the backbone), Network (primarily Novell) servers, and desktop PC configuration and maintenance.Computer Operations. Projects include Corporate Data Warehouse Sales Support Project (PACES), Checkout Direct , Retail Direct (a web-based product for our Retail Customers that allow them to access our Data Warehouse via the Internet), Control Test Analysis Decision Support System, the Order Control System, the Corporate Internet and Intranet, Year 2000 Project, and several other development and maintenance projects.Additional responsibilities included:Principal architect for the new systems and author of the bi-annual Enterprise Architecture Plan.Authored Catalina's Corporate Development Methodology and educated all MIS managers. Responsibility for evaluation and selection of numerous technologies selected for use at Catalina. They include; Red Brick, Oracle, Visual Studio (Visual Basic), DEC Alpha with Unix, HP Servers with NT (MTS, IIS, DCOM), BrioQuery, disk arrays, network technologies.

Responsible for a team of Lead Systems Analyst that matrixed across the Application Development Group to support client/server projects. The group consisted of a Data Architect/Oracle DBMS expert, a Unix Systems Administrator, a Methodology/IEF Case Tool Manager, a Windows/GUI/Powerbuilder/IEF expert, a Texas Instrument IEF consultant, and various contractors at different times in support of special projects. The special projects completed included evaluation, selection, and implementation of a middleware product (EDA/SQL), a client/server change management product (PVCS), and a DSS/EIS database product (EsseBase). Additionally, the team performed the following studies: Store Architecture Evaluation, Client/Server Migration Plan, Infrastructure Architecture Evaluation, LAN Evaluation, CASE Tool Selection, Methodology Selection, and Server back-up strategy study.Note: Eckerd Drug Company outsourced to IBM's ISSC June 1993. Most Information Systems employees, including myself, became ISSC employees on September 1, 1993.

Managed a task force assigned to evaluate and recommend a new Systems Architecture to support our long-range plan. We evaluated hardware and software in the following categories: EIS/DSS Tools, 4GL GUI builders, Relational Databases (with distributed capabilities), Client Server (distributed data and distributed function) architectures, Information Warehouse architectures, UNIX Servers, TP monitors, and CASE tools. Project leader for numerous development projects centered on redesigning Eckerd's central drug database system. The system, accessed on-line by all 1700 Eckerd pharmacies, contains information about all drugs sold by Eckerd Corporation. All development was completed using COBOL II in an IMS DB/DC environment, with DB2 and DL/I, using Knowledgeware's ADW CASE toolset from analysis through construction. The uses of COBOL II and ADW through construction were firsts for Eckerd Corporation. Over 120 programs and screens were generated using the ADW design and construction tools through three projects.Wrote and taught classes in COBOL II and ADW design through construction. Presented the COBOL II class to the entire development staff (over 100 employees), and the ADW class to twenty developers selected to work on the next wave of CASE projects. All work for this was done after hours on my own time.Installed Eckerd's first systems development LAN. This included two servers running OS/2 LAN Server with MicroFocus/Stingray, ADW, MS Word, and MS Excel.Evaluated and recommended the purchase of the following software for the new systems development LAN, MicroFocus, IEF, ADW, Microsoft Word and Excel. Benchmarked and recommended the purchase of the new development workstations. Several platforms were benchmarked and the COMPAQ 486's with OS/2 2.0 Extended Services was selected and rolled-out to over 100 developers' desktops.

Initiated Perot Systems first internal training and development program. Developed several technical-training courses for the company. Wrote and instructed courses on the following topics: JCL, VSAM, and structured programming using COBOL II, Dump Solving, IMS/DB, CICS and File-Aid.Managed an eighteen member development team in the creation of MCI's new commercial billing system for their new product, Vision. This project included the use of a structured development methodology during the entire life cycle of the project (planning through implementation). The system was developed using CICS and DL/I written in COBOL II. This project had a budget of $7 million and was completed on time and under budget.Team leader of a system testing team for the implementation of a new release of the VNet Billing System.

Taught the following topics: JCL, COBOL, ALC, CICS, VSAM, IBM Utilities, Structured Programming, Systems of Life Cycle (EDS's Methodology), and problem solving techniques. Instructed over 220 students for the EDS System Engineering Development - Phase II program.

Managed two teams of Systems Engineers during the implementation of all new systems at a new General Motors Truck Plant. One team installed and maintained "process control" systems written in IMS/COBOL on a dual 4381 in-house data center. The second team installed and maintained "business" systems written in CICS/PLI on an off-site data center with multiple 3083 hosts. All implementation were completed on time and under budget

Designed, constructed, installed and maintained various "business" systems for the Truck Assembly Plant. Systems included financial (A/P, G/L), manpower control, materials management, quality assurance and vehicle order/scheduling systems.Note: General Motors purchased EDS in late 1984. Most Information Systems employees, including myself, became EDS employees on January 1, 1985.
