About Lars Ebbesson

My goal is to work with the aquaculture industry to become more sustainable by improving the real-time understanding and prediction capacity of a production site. My present focus is on integrating fish biology with emerging technologies to digitizing all aspects of fish biology related to production. Expert in bring people from different research fields together to innovate new possibilities. With 30 years experience in fish biology, my research interests are broad and include neuroscience, endocrinology, physiology, behavior salmon smoltification, sustainable aquaculture and welfare assessment. Additional projects are regulation of neural plasticity; molecular and functional relationships between environmental stressors, neural plasticity, and learning and memory; identification of fish robustness indicators; environmental impacts on fish brain development and function; functional regulation of deep-brain photoreceptors and downstream consequences; and functional neuroanatomy.Specialties: digitizing biology aquaculture fish neuroanatomy, neuroendocrinology, endocrinology, physiology, parr-smolt transformation, fish welfare, behavior environmental impacts

Innovative fish rearing solutions are necessary to adapt to society´s demand for increased marine food production with reduced environmental footprint, changes in climate, resource availability and regulations. As new rearing strategies are developed, it is essential to acquire new knowledge about fish biology, production and welfare in combination with environmental monitoring. A central justification for establishing this centre is to improve scientific discoveries across disciplines. Our vision is to develop innovations to support sustainable aquaculture, through cross-disciplinary research bridging the demands of future aquaculture food production and multi-culture solutions.Equally important will be to build a platform with an enthusiastic and creative environment that continues to educate highly qualified candidates through research-based educational programs such as the new Aquaculture Integrated Master/Civil Engineer program. Establishing a steady supply of highly qualified young researchers into academia and industry will permit more effective knowledge transfer and facilitate sustainable growth of modern aquaculture.

My role is to coordinate the EDIH Oceanopolis activities related to aquaculture and fisheries to enable and accelerate the uptake of digital technologies that promote sustainablity in food from the ocean. EDIH Oceanopolis is a partly EU-funded digitization hub dedicated to stimulating faster technology development, as well as reducing barriers to promote faster development, increased adaptation and competitiveness along the Norwegian coast. We are focused on the uptake of new digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, cyber security in typical coastal industries and local communities. This is to promote faster adaptation and increased competence.
