Profile bio

About Lars Frøyd

I am an expert on global analysis of offshore dynamic and floating structures, i.e: floating and bottom fixed wind turbines, O&G platforms and FPSO's, and their moorings and risers/cables. My main strength is combination of strong theoretical/analytical/digital skills with experience on stakeholder/interface- and project management, and practical experience from marine operations and offshore work. I have experience from Operator side, Engineering Contractor side, and Installation Contractor side. My experience in design and analysis of offshore dynamic systems include: Global dynamic analysis of floater motions, mooring lines, flexible risers and power cables, floating wind turbines. Design of permanent mooring systems. Design of dynamic riser/cable systems with ancillaries. Subsea layout and riser routing, on-bottom stability. My experience in marine operations and installation include: Heavy lifting, wind turbine installation, permanent mooring chains, dynamic and static riser/cable installation, vertical lay systems, J-tube pull-in, subsea end tie-in and in-place analyses, etc. I am familiar with procedure and spec writing, HAZOP’s, HAZID’s and Risk Assessments, and familiar with relevant NORSOK, DNV and API standards.

Listed skills include Offshore Wind Energy, Marine Operations, Subsea Engineering, Wind Turbine Design, and 26 others.

Lead Engineer Wind Energy

Asker

Specialist on global analysis of offshore dynamic systems. Extensive experience with floating and fixed offshore wind turbines, permanent offshore moorings, flexible riser systems, offshore power cables and umbilicals, subsea tie-in, offshore transport and installation, riser installation and replacement, subsea layout, etc. Development of coupled aeroelastic software for floating wind turbines based on OrcaFlex. Contributed in offshore wind JIP's and development of design methodology/standards for floating wind. Contributed to development of digital solutions, tools and methodology for automation of analyses and handling/visualization of large data sets related to sensor data and measurement campaigns. Both theoretical and practical experience. In total around 8 weeks offshore on 3 separate campaigns.

Offshore Wind Development Engineer

Oslo Area, Norway

Lead engineer Coupled Analysis during FEED and EPCI of Hywind Tampen, world's largest floating wind farm. Responsible for modeling and dynamic global analysis for design and load evaluation of the floating wind turbines. Responsible for mooring system design and analysis.

Sep 2018 - Mar 2021

Hywind Scotland Marine Operations Engineer

Oslo

I was responsible for all technical aspects and daily follow-up of the heavy lift mating contract and associated interfaces. This was a first-of-its-kind operation where 5 wind turbines were lifted and mated onto floating foundations, with extreme requirements on weather limitations and tolerances. In addition to follow up the lifting contractor and their analyses and documentation, I lead the internal analysis team. I entered late in the project when mating procedure and analyses were at draft level, but I discovered severe shortcomings in the analysis work and had to force through late design and procedural changes (which likely avoided a catastrophic failure during the lifting of the first turbine). I also discovered that the mating site wind characteristics were uncertain and that this could cause several days of waiting on weather (at huge cost). I took the initiative to a LIDAR wind measurement campaign starting just weeks before the operation, but this was sufficient for necessary improvements and confidence in the local weather forecasts. In the weeks leading up to, and during, offshore campaign I functioned as the de facto project manager and coordinator for vessel representatives, in addition to coordinating as-built last-minute analyses, and contractors for dimensional survey, wind measurements and forecasts. While offshore, I noticed that lack of inter-contract communication was leading to non-optimal schedule and potential for several days of lost time. On my own initiative I liaised with the Project Director and started coordinating the scheduling resources directly and we were able to save at least 4 days of waiting time with the worlds largest heavy lift vessel Saipem 7000. The engagement was a project based secondment from 4Subsea.

Jun 2016 - Aug 2017

Project Engineer

Emas Amc

Oslo Area, Norway

Responsible for subsea layout related to installation of 2 out of 3 new subsea manifold structures at Njord installed summer 2013. Due to congested seabed and unexpectedly difficult soil conditions no solution for the center manifold had been found and it was planned delayed to 2014 when I started. I had no experience in this field but got proficient quickly and was able to find a solution to the center manifold location with a novel way of using subsea installation aids. All manifolds were installed summer 2013, leading to huge savings for the client Statoil. Work included routing, installation and tie-in of several risers and jumpers, all the way from conceptual work, analyses, lay-table generation, and procedure writing, to going offshore as project engineer during installation of the first manifold. The engagement was a project based secondment from 4Subsea.

Feb 2013 - Jul 2013

Phd Candidate

Trondheim Area, Norway

Aeroelastic design considerations and evaluation of dynamic loads on wind turbine blades and WTG structures considering future (8MW+) turbine sizes. Evaluation of wind turbine up-scaling effects on blade structural design, natural frequencies, ultimate and fatigue loads and governing load cases, blade material requirements and control strategies. Development of design methodology and design software for efficient and realistic design of utility-scale wind turbine blades. Supervision of four MSc students.

Aug 2009 - Aug 2012

Mechanical Design Engineer

Trondheim Area, Norway

Design and drawing of machine parts and pipe systems for retrofitting a wind turbine with a new hydrostatic transmission. 3D CAD drawing, simple FE analysis, and rapid prototyping using SolidWorks software. This was a summer internship and part time job next to studies.
