I’m a professional storyteller; I tell stories using numbers. As anyone familiar with accounting knows, the face of financials has little meaning if we’re not comparing it to anything. If you’re not familiar with accounting, then financials have even less meaning. That’s where I come in. I take the story told by numbers and put it into words and visualizations to aid in decision making.I am constantly learning. When I learn a process, I seek to understand every part of it. I look for ways that it could lead to a PEBKAC error or intentional manipulation. I’m often accused of “overthinking” the issue. I’ve been the SME whenever my employer has switched ERM software or implemented additional software. Being an intermediate between accounting an IT resulted in a solution that met the needs of multiple teams who used that software. When I decided to earn my Master of Accountancy, I chose the Accounting and Business Analytics track to improve my ability to understand and interpret results. Finance is being automated at a rapid pace. Robotics and AI can tell you the numbers, but they can’t be a business partner when it comes to understanding and acting on those results. I am a future CFE because fraud detection and prevention are vital aspects of any organization. Asset misappropriation isn’t difficult if sufficient controls aren’t in place. If we can’t detect errors (intentional or not), then how can we say with confidence that our work is accurate?
