CurrentThe BioBase is a state-of-the-art community science lab, housed in the brand new Lower Eastside Girls Club Center for Community. At the BioBase, students from all socioeconomic backgrounds will have access to a research-grade microscopy facility. There, they will receive hands-on training from PhD level scientists, learning to nurture their natural curiosity and critical thinking skills. The BioBase offers common core aligned laboratory experiences for schools wishing to visit for field trips. I studied cellular neuroscience, with an emphasis on the molecular interactions at the nerve cell surface. The molecular handshake between nerve cell axons and the myelin that ensheathes them is essential for rapid nerve conduction, but also nurtures axons, orchestrates axon ultrastructure, and limits axon regeneration. Among the molecules involved in regulating axon-myelin interactions is myelin-associated glycoprotein. MAG inhibits axon outgrowth in membrane bound and soluble chimeric forms. I produced stable MAG-expressing cell lines (membrane bound and soluble forms of MAG) and tested their ability to inhibit axon outgrowth from different primary rodent nerve cells (cerebellar granule neurons and dorsal root ganglion neurons) and embryonic stem cell-derived motoneurons in cell culture.
