I’m an independent writer, journalist and artist covering identity and human rights through a transnational, feminist perspective. A specialist on China, I also keep an eye on East and Southeast Asia.Over the last decade, I’ve covered diverse topics—from business to the environment—but now gravitate towards stories grappling with the intersection of human rights, politics and culture. My writing has been published by The Guardian, CNN, The Economist, Foreign Policy, Nation, WIRED, the New Statesman, Los Angeles Times, BBC, Quartz, openDemocracy, and others. I also make films. I was the reporter, narrator and producer of a BBC Eye documentary titled “China’s Silenced Feminist” that investigated the “disappearance” of leading #MeToo journalist Sophia Huang Xueqin. In addition to co-producing a series of TV reports on the outbreak of Covid in China, I executive-produced the short film "China's feminist Fightback" for Channel 4 News. Previously, I wrote about Hong Kong and China for The Diplomat and was a staff news reporter at the South China Morning Post. Born and raised in Hong Kong, I’m now based in London. Freelance commissions are welcome.Email: jessielau (at) live.comTwitter/Instagram: @_laujessieYouTube: laujessiemediaWebsite: www.laujessie.com
