Would you like your readers to be immersed in your story and invested in your characters? Would you like to prevent your readers from shouting:•‘Who on earth is Tim? I thought his name was Tom.’• ‘This is the fourth book in the series. I thought this character was nine in the first book, why is he eight in this one?’• ‘“1960’s”. That doesn’t need an apostrophe.’• Commenting on all those other little inconsistences that brings a reader out of a story.I do this by:• Checking your spelling, punctuation and grammar• Ensuring the conventions for your chosen English dialect are followed – UK, US or Australian English• Keeping an eye on continuity with regards to character ages, etc• Creating or modifying a style sheet so character names, location names, capitalisation and punctuation, etc are spelt and applied consistentlyRELEVANT EXPERIENCE• Currently, I am proofreading Dirty Laundry by Peter McCollum having finished beta reading and proofreading The Ross Letters and Failure to Adapt by the same author.• In October 2024 I proofread Valentine and the Prince by Terry Hornby• In July 2023 I completed the Becoming a Proofreader course with Knowadays. • To enhance my skills, I began volunteering for Distributed Proofreaders in June 2023. With them, I have worked on forty-seven books including novels, plays and non-fiction.
