A gender-disaggregated household survey design was utilised to estimate respondents how much money female and male heads of household would want to be paid to ‘give up’ their land in the Protected Forest for five years, in turn estimating the cost of conservation of the Protected Forest (Sumatran tiger habitat) in Sumatra, which was validated against opportunity cost comparisons, derived using estimates of the market value of current household land. The ACIAR-supported research informed PES program design and targeting, highlighting the benefits of including women’s voices in land use decision-making and program design. This involved in-country project management of our research in Indonesia, including stakeholder consultation and engagement, primary qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis (spanning key informant interviews, focus groups and gender-disaggregated household surveys), and the presentation of results at conference proceedings and through academic journal publications. This research formed part of the broader IndoGreen ACIAR project.
