About Laura George

Religious Studies has been a passion of mine since secondary school when I was introduced to a subject that, not only developed my knowledge, but allowed me to understand the choices people make, in an immeasurable capacity, in their daily lives. The religious studies curriculum encompasses such a number of imperative topics that I found I passionately wanted to pursue this in my career, helping other students learn to understand not only themselves but the wider world around them.I am a graduate from Canterbury Christchurch University with a joint honors degree in Religious Studies and Psychology. My focus was on systematic theology, ethics and visual media from a mostly Christian perspective, which has allowed me to look at religion with a critical eye, which I aim to pass onto students in my classroom. I also studied a number of other Western and Eastern religions as option topics, giving me a wider knowledge base that supports the broad nature of the Kent Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. Ethics was one of my biggest interests and I have spent time reading around the subject and linking it into my love of psychology.

    On a day-to-day basis I line manage seven teaching staff currently and am a confident leader and manager. I have created the current PSHE curriculum from nothing and am happy to apply hard work in order to achieve my goals and motivate my staff. I have regular meeting with, senior leader, pastoral support managers, staff and parents and have built strong positive relations with them all to create a dialog that further supports my pupils learning. I have also worked closely with our child welfare officer within the planning and running of the PSHE curriculum and am aware of the challenges faced by such roles within the school and the sensitive nature of them.

    I have become an experienced teacher and have many strategies that allow successful teaching and learning to occur in my classroom. I have created visual behaviour display, a department PPT template and, most recently, a student intervention scheme which allowed for feedback to be given to students verbally and effectively. I have also been asked and carried out whole school training on assessment for learning, SEAL, innovative teaching and effective starter and plenary. I have recently been asked by the Principle to look into the nature of manners and behaviour of both staff and students in order to keep up the ethos of the school as a whole and have now been put in charge of implementing these ideas whole school. One of my greatest strengths in teaching is the relationship I gain with my students which allows mutual respect and high expectations of each student’s behaviour in my classroom and around the school grounds. I see my role in this relationship of the utmost importance if I am to engage students, and help them to fulfil their individual potential. Being dyslexic has allowed me a unique viewpoint of the additional educational needs in the curriculum and I feel that, in my classroom, every child does matter and that effective differentiation can be the key to success. Through use of language, technology differentiated learning objectives, outcomes, and supporting documents, I feel I create an environment where students can feel at ease in fulfilling their potential and exceed their expectations. I enjoy many innovate forms teaching and often find this spills over into my classroom through innovative use of applications such as Twitter, Pinterest, Wallwisher, Class DOJO as well as using my ipad for applications such as Poll Anywhere. My latest observation was for a mixed-ability Year 11 class, and it is through these skills that I was able to achieve Outstanding on the new OFSTED framework.
