In my role as at Cats Protection, I am responsible for the daily feeding, cleaning and medicating of cats in the charity’s care. A large part of my role is customer facing, assisting members of the public throughout the rehoming and adoption process. I take enquiries over the phone and by email to offer advice for behavioural management of cats, lost and found pet advice, assistance with trapping and neutering feral cats and admitting cats to come into care. The hands on aspects of my role includes health checking the cats, administering medication as required, cat handling and restraining, behavioural observations and cat socialisation.

I was employed at Beachin Dog Therapy pool on a 0 hour basis. In my role, I was responsible for monitoring the clients use of the pool, to ensure it was used safely and appropriately, and assisting with any sessions that required a more structured therapy approach. I managed bookings and payments for the business, set up the site at the beginning of a shift and cleaned down and locked up at the end of the day.

I undertook this internship in order to gain more practical experience in animal care. I was working with the small mammal team which cares for a diverse number of species including Rodrigues and Seba’s fruit bats, Capybara, Giant Anteater, Aardvarks, Meerkats, Porcupines, Rock Hyrax, Dwarf-mongoose, Red Panda, Visayan Warty Pigs, Naked Mole Rats, Lesser-hedgehog and Lowland-streaked Tenrecs, Dusky Pademelons, Sengi, Tree-shrews and Prevost’s Squirrels. I gained a lot of valuable insight into animal husbandry, welfare and behaviour in a zoo environment.

My role was to ensure that visitors of the zoo had a memorable and enjoyable experience. My responsibilities included welcoming visitors, selling the admission tickets and collecting gift-aid to support the Act for Wildlife charity, maintaining a presentable site to a high standard, and being able to answer any queries the visitors had, which required an in-depth knowledge of the species in the zoo and the in-situ conservation work conducted by the zoo in the UK and abroad.
