CurrentCommittee comprised of seven elected School Committee Members, the Mayor and the President of the Board of AldermanResponsibilities include establishing district goals and policies, long-range planning, constituent service, hiring and evaluation of the superintendent, collective bargaining with several employee unions, review and approval of annual budget, communication and advocacy for district public schools. - Elected in a contested ward race with two opponents through fundraising, platform development, planning, communications (collateral, website, social media) and door-to-door canvassing over a six month period. Ran for second, third and fourth two-year terms unopposed.- Participated in highly transparent and inclusive nationwide search process, resulting in SC unanimous vote for the new superintendent. - Served as Chair of Educational Programs subcommittee, on Rules subcommittee and have served on Finance and Facilities subcommittee.- Prioritized greater school and city collaboration, including representing SC on City facility master planning task force (through 2018) and Harvard lead By All Means Consortium (through present) resulting in cross city-school organizational development and investment to enhance access to and scope of health services and early childhood and out of school time programming. As Chair of the School Committee in 2017- Initiated and designed SC strategic long-range priorities process resulting in equity, human capital strategy and enrollment study initiatives. - Enhanced systemic community engagement including establishing first public comment policy in the City. www.laurapitone.com
