In June I will be heading to Lesotho, Africa, to begin training as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I will be working in the Healthy Youth program. The volunteer term is 2 years, plus 10 weeks of training upon arrival.

As the receptionist I am responsible for answering the main office phone, organizing the conference room schedules and keeping the break area clean. I also process mail, and order food for meetings as well as all of the needed office supplies. When time permits I work on projects that involve graphics and logos.

The Kid Stuff area of the Y is where parents who have come to exercise can drop off their kids. Kid Stuff Staff are responsible for monitoring and playing with the kids, ages 3mo - 10yrs, while they are in the play area. Reading books with or to groups of kids, organizing activities in the gym, and monitoring the play castle are some of the duties I perform. Cleaning and keeping the area neat are also part of my responsibilities as a Kid Stuff Staff member.

I also previously worked at Famous Dave's from August 2006 - August 2009, taking breaks throughout that time while I was away at school. The Linden Hills Famous Dave's I worked at is considered 'half service.' Costumers order their food at the counter where they pay, and servers bring the food to them once it has been prepared by the cooks. Busing tables when costumers were done and running dishes through the washer were also some of the responsibilites I had while working there.

From September 2011 - August 2012 I was a full time AmeriCorps member (1700hrs) in Dubuque, Iowa. I was placed at Audubon Elementary during the school year where I monitored the breakfast program and either worked with students one-on-one or helped with classroom management in 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade. My responsibilities included organizing practices, putting together schedules, and communicating with parents. Over the summer months at the Y I worked with the Teen Adventure Program as well as the Dare to Be A King/ Dare to Be A Queen programs. I also worked with pre school programming, running classes for Super Sports and Tee-ball.From September 2010 - August 2011 I was a part time AmeriCorps member (900hrs). During the school year of this term I worked at Lincoln Elementary School primarily in the library. Book check out and return, material inventory, and new material labeling and placement were some of the tasks I assisted the librarian with. In the summer of this term I was placed at the Dubuque Community Y. At the Y I worked with the Teen Adventure Program. Three days a week I supervised teens that attended the program and participated in activities, character building, lunch, an outing into the community, and swimming. In my initial part time AmeriCorps term (300hrs) I worked through Leisure Services on the Dubuque playgrounds the summer of 2010. While at Hills and Dales I was a personal assistant in an apartment with three individuals who had varying degress of intellectual and physical disabilities. It was my responsibliity to assist the individuals with preparation and consumption of meals, planning leisure time activities, and assisting them with personal cares.

As a member of the planetarium staff I presented constellation and solar system shows to school and scout groups. I also put together various shows for the public. Titles of my public shows are: “Archeoastronomy,” “Exploring the Hubble Space Telescope,” “A Star is Born,” “Pluto and Beyond,” and “The Constellations in our Night Sky.”
