As a Special Adviser I lead media, communications and policy strategy for the Secretary of State and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. My areas of focus include Artificial Intelligence, life sciences, driving start-up investment and growth, online safety and major R&D programmes, including Horizon Europe.Media and Communications:•Media engagements: Lead planned and reactive communications and media engagement for DSIT, the Secretary of State and Ministers, working productively with key national and international media outlets.•Departmental strategy: Lead development and delivery of the communications and media strategy for the Department across all channels based on policy and political priorities.•Political advice: Provide advanced political and media judgement, providing direction and guidance for managing Ministerial engagement and reputation effectively.Policy•Horizon Europe reassociation: Member of team that negotiated the UK’s reassociation to Horizon Europe.•AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park: Member of core organising team for the summit setting policy and political direction with senior officials and the Secretary of State. Also led media and communications strategy and execution.•Online Safety Act: Managed the passage of the world’s most comprehensive piece of online safety legislation through Parliament. Management and Relationships•Media: Maintain close working relationships with all major political editors and relevant sector journalists and news outlets. Act as main press spokesperson for the Department and Secretary of State.•Departmental Communications Team: Set direction, strategy and evaluation metrics for the Departmental Communications Team.•Political coordination: Liaise and coordinate activities with policy and political strategy teams at No.10 and CCHQ.•Sectors: Deep knowledge of and strong network within science and technology sectors, finance and politics.

During my six years at Bloomberg I was a markets and politics reporter. My main areas of focus included the technology sector, investment convictions, Brexit, financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, UK and European politics and quarterly earnings of major public companies in the UK, Europe and the US. I was responsible for a team working across print, broadcast and digital platforms and was the strategic lead representing Bloomberg at external events, orchestrating new partnerships and running campaigns. My strong network of relationships gave me an editorial advantage as a journalist.Reporting:•Research and analysis: Responsible for high-standard and engaging reporting across print, broadcast and online. Notable topics included US tech giants, life sciences, aviation, banking, IPOs/M&A, energy, earnings season cycles and European politics. •Network: Close relationships with organisations and senior newsmakers allowed me to help the newsroom lead on stories and stay ahead of our competitors. I directed coverage from major international conferences such as trade symposiums, political party conferences, European elections and was a member of Bloomberg’s annual World Economic Forum team organising content from Davos.•New partnerships: In 2021 and 2022 I led a team that pitched for external funding, launched and executed two new sponsored series on Bloomberg Television. The first, ‘Bloomberg Green’, focused on how businesses are innovating to address climate change. The second, ‘Power Players’, investigated leading brands, franchises and personalities in global sport.

Production and Management:•News production: This involved prioritising editorial themes, idea generation, writing/editing content, data visualisation, pre-interviewing guests, digital communications, project management for offsite events and arranging interviews with market participants and newsmakers.•Breaking news: Managing evolving stories in a fast-paced environment. •Train, motivate, mentor and manage: Focused on enabling team members to understand markets, acquire editorial judgement, teamwork values and implementing best practices for building relationships.
