In September 2012 I started a 4 year Ph.D. programme looking into the health-promoting effects of high-doses of phytase. I am interested in the way in which nutrition is able to influence health, particularly of the gut. As part of my programme, I participated in a 6 month business placement with AB Vista from August 2014 until February 2015, as well as an additional placement to further my research at Purdue University, USA, from July 2015 until February 2016.Throughout the programme, I have presented my work a number of times (oral and posters) in both internal and external conferences and meetings (nationally and internationally). Being registered with the University of Glasgow, I have also attended many different training events, such as scientific and non-scientific writing, presenting with impact and statistics etc.During the course of my research, I have gained (and will continue to gain) hands-on experience in areas such as: dietary formulation and mixing, swine and chicken husbandry, study planning, protocol writing, data analysis and laboratory work; including titanium digestion, dry matter and gross energy determination, RNA and DNA extraction and PCR. I am also a student editor for the animal bytes section of the BSAS (British Society of Animal Scientists), which involves summarising a scientific paper into a short article which can be read and understood by anyone not necessarily knowledgable in the area. I have also been involved with the second marking of HND and MSc reports, and producing lecture notes for a MSc course in poultry nutrition.I have defended my thesis and am working on corrections to be completed by early January 2017. I expect to formally graduate in the summer of 2017.
