As postdoctoral fellow in the Dr. Jennifer Erwin’s group, I investigated disease-causal mechanisms of X-linked Dystonia Parkinsonism (XDP), an incurable and fatal neurodegenerative movement disorder caused by an inherited mobile element mutation. Working on this project allowed me to develop my expertise in stem cell biology and neuroscience while continuing to pursue my interests in genetics and gene expression.

Rotation Project 1 - Prof. Sonia Rocha Lab, studying the role of HIF-1b in NF-kB pathway.Rotation Project 2 - Prof. Kate Storey Lab, studying how cell cycle progression can affect onset of neural differentiation.Rotation Project 3 - Prof. Nicola Stanley-Wall, investigating the role of TapA protein in B. subtilis biofilm formation. Main PhD project (September 2015 - November 2018) - Professor Sonia Rocha Lab. The final aim of my project was to elucidate the role of HIF-2a and HIF-1b in the regulation of the NF-kB pathway in a context of hypoxia and inflammation. In order to do that, I used a wide variety of molecular and biochemical approaches on different human cancer cell lines, as well as Drosophila Melanogaster as in vivo animal model.

In the Human Genetics Section of the National Institute of Aging, NIH, my main interest was investigating the mechanisms of germ cell/follicle loss in the mouse ovarian reserve. To better understand what causes the strong attrition of oocytes and follicles in women before the establishment of a fixed follicle reserve, I used two mouse models in which two genes, Foxl2 and Lhx8, are depleted. To investigate the cell death I used different molecular biology techniques, such as q-PCR and microarrays for gene expression studies, as well as immunohistochemistry and other assays.
