I'm an environmental biologist with a passion for conducting risk assessments in order to promote consumer and environmental safety. My PhD work focused on understanding methyl-mercury bioaccumulation dynamics in large marine animals and assessing the potential health risks associated with mercury toxicity for both marine wildlife and consumers of wildlife-derived products. I have worked primarily on shark ecotoxicology and food safety assessments of the shark fin and meat trade. I have led the largest survey of trace elements present in processed shark fins from Hong Kong and China, resulting in a peer-reviewed publication that prompted the Hong Kong Center for Food Safety to increase surveillance on seafood safety compliance. I have also provided regulatory guidance regarding local consumption of shark meat to the Department of Marine Resources and Fisheries of Tobago reflected in the official Sustainable Shark and Ray Management Plan for NE Tobago. My ecotoxicology experience extends to other marine wildlife including large squids, baleen whales, dolphins and fishes. I am proficient in the use and solving of technical issues of AFS, ICP-MS and GC-CVAFS instrumentation and PCR and ELISA assays. I have a high ability to understand, interpret and adapt standard operating procedures and design new toxicity studies. I am self-motivated, organized, team oriented, and able to handle multiple projects concurrently. I have experience in leading national and international research projects that require to effectively communicate with all stakeholders, delegate tasks and timely present deliverables. Through my years of work I have gained extensive experience in communicating science to broad audiences in person and through multiple media platforms.
