Dr. Laura Hamman-Ortiz is an Assistant Professor of TESOL and Bilingual Education at the University of Rhode Island.Laura's research is situated at the intersection of applied linguistics and education, exploring the language and literacy learning experiences of emergent bilingual students. She has several active strands of research, including (1) cultivating critical translanguaging spaces with teachers of bi/multilingual learners; (2) exploring issues of equity in two-way immersion programs; and (3) examining how teachers take up professional learning as they navigate institutional and ideological constraints and opportunities. Her research has been published in a range of academic journals and edited volumes, including TESOL Quarterly, the Bilingual Research Journal, and Language and Education.At URI, Laura teaches graduate and undergraduate courses related to ESL/bilingual education methods, translanguaging, second language acquisition theory/research, and foundations for multilingual learner education (e.g., history, policy, program models, etc.). Laura's commitment to bilingual education and advocacy for bi/multilingual students extends to a range of other professional and service activities. She is on the Board of the Multi-state Association for Bilingual Education, Northeast (MABE) and Nuestro Mundo Charter School in Providence, RI. She also supports research and professional development efforts for the Two-Way Immersion Network of Catholic Schools at Boston College.
