Using various methods of flow visualization and velocity measurement, I studied the flow past mechanical prosthetic heart valves to better understand how they damage blood cells and cause blood to clot. As part of this research, I achieved the following:• Designed, modeled, built, and tested a flow loop to generate physiological pressure and flow waveforms of the aorta.• Proved the importance of the aortic sinus’s shape towards reducing blood turbulence. • Identified from the results an implantation orientation for the valve that results in lowered stresses on blood, increased coronary flow, and decreased risk of blood clot formation. -
