As a Senior Research Fellow based at the Institute for Global Health, I worked on The EVE Project, a community-based co-created research study to improve the evidence around preventing violence against women in the world’s highest prevalence settings, with case studies in Peru and Samoa, and Siyaphambili Youth, an interdisciplinary participatory Global Challenges Research Fund project looking at contextual factors that shape HIV risk and co-morbidities for young people in South Africa.

My role involves working with under-served populations (e.g. young people, BAME groups, MSM, drug users, domestic violence survivors, sex workers and those who are homeless) to promote sexual health and wellbeing and encourage access to community services. I administer rapid HIV Point of Care instant finger prick tests and provide clients with self-sample kits to test for other STIs. I also facilitate sexual health workshops in settings such as psychiatric wards. DBS checked.

Activities included: finalising my last PhD paper for publication; conducting new analyses on environment-breastfeeding links using an online UK survey dataset; training in climate change tipping points, environmental justice, air pollution monitoring, creative research methods, R, and Spanish; organising and hosting Environment x Women’s Health Workshops and conducting interviews with Peruvian NGOs on environmental effects on women’s health in Peru.

I worked with Dr Tiziana Leone on a project looking at the determinants and impacts of menarche (age at first period) and menopause in low- and middle-income countries. I conducted a scoping literature and data review and statistical analysis of Demographic and Health Survey data. I assisted with preparing publications and presented preliminary findings at a symposium on Adolescence in Tokyo, Japan.

I designed and delivered a two day crash-course in Statistics and Stata for 3rd year undergraduates in June 2019. In November and December 2019, I gave 5 x 1.5 hr lectures and 2 x 2hr revision sessions in Applied Epidemiology & Social Statistics for 2nd year undergraduates and was responsible for finalising and overseeing the marking of student assignments and exams.

I taught seminars for the 2nd year Undergraduate module Key Concepts in Global Health. The module explores (a) the link between social and economic transformations in society and global public health; and (b) the impact of policy and interventions on global health. It takes an interdisciplinary approach that draws on multiple fields including public global health, sociology, economics, demography and philosophy. I led small group tutorial discussions for 3rd year BA Human Sciences undergraduates for the Evolutionary Medicine and Public Health module. This module draws on evolutionary principles and the scientific method to propose a broad and inclusive perspective for understanding the contexts in which diseases appear, manifest and evolve. The course aims to develop an analytical understanding of the complex ways in which biology and culture are intertwined, thereby shedding new light on public health policies and biomedical practices. As a tutor I facilitated small group discussions (2 or 3 students at a time) on key themes and provided feedback to students on their weekly formative essays. I also marked collection papers and final exams for this module.

I was a fieldworker for two randomised controlled trials of interventions aiming to reduce unintended teenage pregnancy among secondary school students in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The role involved visiting secondary schools in Greater London to collect baseline and follow-up data. As a Lead Fieldworker for one of the trials, I was additionally tasked with providing information sessions to students one week prior to data collection and managing other fieldworkers on site during data collection visits, as well as coding survey responses.
