I was invited to assist in the process of opening up H&M in South Africa. Initially asked to do specialised research into location viability for their South African head quarters, then became their primary location specialist based in Cape Town. I acted as a central conduit for all the forerunner departments tasked with the initial set up of the H&M office, as well as taking charge of the relocation of senior foreign staff members and their families.As a fellow Scandinavian and able to work within H&M’s friendly, professional, and transparent culture, I have been given a far reaching breadth of tasks, ranging from overviews of the fixed/mobile/data line industry, medical insurance, conducting comprehensive industry specific research, sourcing legal and recruitment experts, opening up lines of communication with industry specialists, organising storage and managing first shipments of IT-equipment, finding specific contacts within PR, marketing, TV-shows, and much more - tasks that would have been cumbersome to do from Sweden, had they not had someone on the ground in South Africa.Of greatest benefit to H&M is my ability to feedback honest, straightforward, well sourced information, gleaned from my large and well established network of like minded individuals, a network nurtured from over 22 years of living in South Africa - presenting H&M with a range of options, enabling them to make final decisions.It has been a pleasure guiding H&M through the nuances of conducting business in South Africa by bridging culture differences. This included guiding through the unique structural segmentation of the consumer market, as well how the media/advertising industry operates.It has been exciting and energising working with one of the world’s largest retailers. Tasked with setting up and then managing the office in Africa for Europe's largest travel insurance company.My office handled all emergency cases and claims throughout Sub Saharan Africa as well as visiting and negotiating with hospitals, air-ambulance companies and other medical/emergency facilities on the continent.
