About Laura Mariko Marx

I’m a lifelong animal lover and conservationist! I attribute my love for the natural world to having grown up in San Diego, a city that gave me great exposure to animals, conservation issues and the outdoors, and offers diverse opportunities to work in the field. I strive to make an impact towards conservation and spread the same passion to others, so that our future generations can appreciate the same natural wonders we can enjoy now. I have been fortunate enough to travel abroad many times during my educational career, both as an undergraduate student and as a graduate student. During these courses abroad, I learned about the effectiveness of community conservation programs, and was introduced to many different field research methods. My travels gave me more exposure to the beauty and variety of life on earth and furthered my motivation to protect and care for it.My master plan in graduate school focused on connecting people and animals by informing and engaging urban communities in conservation. Unfortunately, in major urban centers there is a growing disconnect with nature. I think the most important way to encourage environmental action is by spreading awareness and engaging others through hands-on learning and experiences. My goal as a conservationist is to be able to connect to all audiences and improve accessibility, because lack of diversity in the field is a problem. My career thus far involves a range of experience working in positions involving animal husbandry, animal behavior research, zoo marketing, and informal education positions. In addition to zoo work, I’ve recently found a passion in contributing my skills and spreading conservation knowledge through freelance writing work! You can view samples of my writing linked below on my WordPress.

Listed skills include Animal Care, Animal Handling, Animal Behavior, Scientific Writing, and 4 others.
