I started a licensed home care services agency to offer assistance with activities of daily living and other services needed by older adults in their homes. I was responsible for policy development and implementation, recruitment/hiring of staff, screening and assessment of clients, and coordination of care and services.This position made me aware of the dire need for a competent and adequate paraprofessional home care workforce paid for by public and private insurance. There are increasingly more frail, elderly, nursing-home-eligible adults who prefer to remain in place; and require anywhere from four to 24 hours of care daily. This need is particularly challenging to meet in rural areas with limited labor pools.
