About Laura Blanco

Laura Blanco is a Sr. Operations and Strategy Consultant at The World Bank. She possess expertise in c++, knowledge management. Colleagues describe her as "I am writing to recommend Laura Cardona Blanco with great enthusiasm. She has been my research assistant and my student, and I am confident that she will perform with excellence. I first met Laura when she was a student in the M.A.-level Security Studies Program in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University where I was assistant professor. Out of the eighty students who applied to be my assistant, she already clearly stood out although it was her first year in the United States. As my research assistant, she assisted me with in-depth research on my work on illicit economies and military conflict in Latin America and Asia, locating relevant materials and writing-up weekly briefs on key developments in the areas we were tracking. Highly-motivated and hard-working, she did not wait for her assignments; she undertook various initiatives, writing up briefs on relevant issues and sending me notes from conferences she attended and considered relevant for our work. The following semester I got to know Laura even better as, in addition to continuing to be my research assistant, she also was a student in my seminar on Illicit Economies and Military Conflict. Once again, her intellect was clear. She was always highly motivated to discuss with me the issues in class, and worked very hard on her 30-page class paper on counternarcotics interdiction efforts in Colombia and their implication for counterinsurgency efforts in the country. I was so impressed with Laura’s talents and dedication and her ability to keep a cool head under pressure that I invited her to accompany me on my fieldwork in Colombia during the summer of 2008. The work clearly went beyond the regular terms of a research assistant position. It entailed for Laura to do simultaneous translations in field while we were interviewing Colombian military officers, coca growers, captured FARC members and demobilized paramilitaries, an NGO workers operating often in highly violent and dangerous areas throughout Colombia and to assist with highly complex logistics to remote areas of illegality and violence. As someone who often conducts such fieldwork, I am only too aware of the potential risks to research activity and for the researchers that can arise during such fieldwork and the absolute need to have reliable colleagues who will not panic in a moment of crisis and have the diplomatic skills to put interviewees at ease so as not to jeopardize the research, the researchers, and the interviewees. I was confident enough in Laura’s skills although it was her first fieldwork of such kind that I invited her along. She performed excellently and surpassed my already-high expectations, and the fieldwork proved very productive. I recommend her with great enthusiasm."

Listed skills include C++ and Knowledge Management.
