Department Head, Quantum Computing And Technologies (Focus Hpc Qc Integration)Leibniz Supercomputing Centre Apr 2022 - PresentGarching Near Munich, Bavaria, DeAs department head of Quantum Computing and Technologies, I lead an ever-growing, diverse group of computer scientists. quantum physicists. computer engineers, software developers and program development specialists in pursuit of researching, advancing and providing quantum computing technologies for local and international advanced computing communities. Our team provides scientific users with a broad portfolio of quantum resources and services, including quantum simulators, remote access to quantum hardware, on-premise quantum systems, development environment tools, scientific consultancy, and education/training. A main focus of this team is the research and development of integration pathways for quantum acceleration capabilities for next-generation high-performance computing (HPC) systems. In QC and QC-accelerated HPC, I manage a large R&D portfolio consisting of state, national and European initiatives focused on technology maturation, facilities compliance, software development, user services and application support. Started in April 2022, the QCT has seated its first of several quantum computing systems in its Quantum Integration Centre (QIC). As its PI, I drove the submission to host a EuroHPC Joint Undertaking quantum computer on behalf of LRZ, the state of Bavaria and Germany. Internationally, I work with colleagues to convene the communities of computer science and quantum physics towards integration of HPC and QC through efforts including workshops, conference presentations and technical think tank coordination; more information is outlined on HPCQC.org. -
Head Of Strategic Development And PartnershipsLeibniz Supercomputing Centre Mar 2019 - Jul 2022Garching Near Munich, Bavaria, DeI develop and execute mid and long-range strategic growth initiatives, ensuring alignment of goals established in consultation with the chair of the board, the board of directors, and the activities of the science and technology units at LRZ. Specifically, my portfolio centers on supercomputing capabilities—exascale, AI, and quantum. I establish cohesion and cadence across various efforts including HPC hardware and software co-design, research portfolio design, integrated service offerings, user analysis and profiling, and predictive needs assessment. I build and maintain key partnerships with vendors and alliances with regional and international ecosystem partners, solidify objectives, apply analysis, and develop insights.Most recently, I work to bring together computing centers worldwide on behalf of LRZ as a founding member of the International Association for Supercomputing Centers (IASC) to address common organizational and operations issues.
