Every place along my career has been very close to the intersection of creativity and order.My first advertising job—Creative Department Manager at Young & Rubicam in New York—involved bringing order to the sometimes chaotic and always fun realm of copywriters, art directors and Big Ideas. As a writer, I’m okay with huge amounts of information, and actually enjoy building frameworks to articulate stories that clients are unable—or too busy—to craft for themselves. My favorite thing about working in marketing is learning about lots of disparate things. After a number of years in the business, you know just enough to make polite conversation about things like motor oil, banking, barbecue sauce and other random stuff.In addition to a steady diet of marketing projects, I had the rare opportunity to write and edit U.S. Congressional testimonies. It was an interesting challenge to express a complex economic topic—commodities futures speculation—in everyday language. One such testimony was among the most downloaded ever. More recently, I got to be the Communications Lead for the Workplace 2020 project at The Coca-Cola Company. The project—the renovation of the company’s Atlanta headquarters campus—was a fascinating confluence of architecture, real estate, workplace strategy and change management. My current role as Partner at HOT° INC. is still at the intersection of creativity and order. HOT° is a brand strategy and communications design collaborative. While the leadership team does a lot of heavy lifting, our business model is based on a network that allows custom teams to coalesce around projects, bringing the right talent for each job. Design & Copy, Inc. is my writing and project management consultancy. Most days, I wear my HOTº hat and my DCI hat at the same time, and thrive on the variety that brings.
