In my role as an Alternate Recess Interventionist, I implemented positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) within an elementary school setting.I worked under the supervision of the Assistant Principal in my own classroom.Children who had behavioral or focus issues within their primary classroom or had trouble on the playground were referred to me as an intervention prior to being suspended. We were highly successful and earned many rewards from a nationally sponsored recycling contest. The students who were involved experienced a greater sense of ownership over their school and the environment.One of the many other duties I assumed was the upkeep and care of our school habitat, which housed our school's desert tortoise. In addition to getting the children excited about caring for the environment, I was able to give them tasks that would serve a dual purpose: getting physical activity and having responsibilities.In this position I worked and communicated the goals for each student with their teachers on a weekly or more frequent basis. I researched and implemented strategies to ensure the child was making progress on their goals and then reported their progress back to their teachers. I also reviewed individualized education programs (IEP) as necessary to ensure that any interventions aligned with other goals.
