I maintained biology lab by stocking supplies and reordering new supplies. I assisted students with their semester-long project by aiding them in roadblocks in R programming. I also assisted them with processing their leaves from making stomata casts and scoring their leaves to mounting them for a permanent herbarium.

I worked as a team with other students in my class to do original research on the relationship between leaf morphological characteristics and mean annual temperature. I learned how to program with R and do basic statistical analysis along with leaf analysis such as scoring, performing stomata casts, and mounting the leaves.

Through this class, I learned the basics of marine biological research and preservation of collected specimens. The first two weeks were spent in lecture learning about basic physics and chemistry of the ocean along with learning the scientific classifications of common animals. The last week of the class, we went on a field excursion to Humboldt Bay and the surrounding area. We worked with Humboldt State University Marine Lab to do some trolling in Humboldt Bay and to preserve the specimens that we collected.

I enjoy helping others become more adept at subjects that they struggle with, especially if that is science or mathematics related. It is very rewarding to see someone who was struggling with a concept at the beginning of our tutor session and then to see him or her begin to grasp the concept and then able to articulate and use that concept to help them understand something else. I really enjoy the learning process and helping others through it so that they can achieve their individual academic goals.
