About Lauren Camera
I'm available for freelance and contract writing, reporting, editing and all types of storytelling. I've been dissecting domestic policy issues in the U.S. for more than 15 years, during which I've dug into the agendas of the last four administrations, provided expert analysis of federal and state legislation and produced data projects on important topics like the economic impact of access to childcare, school district boundaries and the unequal distribution of certain streams of federal funding meant for low-income families. Most of my work centers on issues of equity. I also cover electoral politics, including the evolving state of the Republican Party, the rise of women’s issues in motivating voters and the implications of the ongoing criminal trials of former President Donald Trump. I'm proud to be working part-time as a content strategist for Whiteboard Advisors and also contributing stories to U.S. News & World Report and The 74. In addition, I'm an adjunct professor at American University, where I teach a policy writing seminar for graduate students about how to make policy issues exciting and engaging to non-expert audiences. Before launching a freelance career, I was a senior writer at U.S. News and World Report for nine years, during which I reported on major policy debates underway in Congress, at the White House and the Supreme Court, in state houses, governors’ mansions and school boards across the country. I was a 2020 finalist for investigative reporting from the Society for Professional Journalists for a series that exposed how the Trump administration tried to eliminate a government web site meant to help student loan borrowers who had been defrauded by for-profit schools. I was also named a 2013 Spencer Education Fellow at Columbia University’s School of Journalism, a prestigious award that allowed me to conduct a reporting project about the impact of the Obama administration’s competitive education grant, Race to the Top. Other news organizations I've written for include Education Week, The Hechinger Report, Congressional Quarterly, Roll Call and the Chronicle of Higher Education. I’ve been a frequent guest on C-SPAN and have appeared on many TV and radio shows to analyze domestic policy issues. I also moderate discussions and present my reporting to audiences, including at SXSW, The Brookings Institute, The Education Trust, the American Enterprise Institute and others.
