The lab's focus was to uncover the catabolic biochemical pathways downstream of AMP kinase (AMPK) in hepatocytes. One downstream target of particular interest is SREBP-1c, a transcription factor responsible for the expression of proteins involved in fatty-acid synthesis, which is "turned off" when AMPK is activated. ShephardessNavajo Reservation Mar 2000 - Mar 2001Worked for Faye Tso, a traditional Navajo medicine woman/herbalist and acclaimed potter with pieces displayed in galleries around the country including the Smithsonian. For a year, I lived on the Tso family's land east of Tuba City, AZ. I was primarily responsible for the care of their flock of sheep and goats. During the year I spent on the reservation, I learned directly about traditional Navajo culture through such experiences such as: living in a hogan with no running water or electricity, participating in ceremonies; gathering and preparing clay to then hand build pottery; as well as collecting and helping to prepare herbal medicines. These experiences engendered in me an appreciation of the technological and scientific advances Western civilization has afforded to us while respecting the grounded, nature-based existence we all live in but may overlook. It also allowed for me to connect with a part of my own heritage as a relation to the now extinct Cascade band of Native Americans of the Columbia River gorge.
