In June 2015 I joined the Haematology and Blood Transfusion clinical laboratory team as a band 5 Biomedical Scientist.

At Stoke Mandeville Hospital I was able to gain valuable practical experience in Haematology, Biochemistry, Immunology and Virology as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist. This placement provided me with the opportunity to complete my IBMS registration portfolio demonstrating that I have been able to meet all of the competencies required by the registration standards.On a daily basis I demonstrated my ability to use key basic laboratory skills such as preparing reagents, using LIMS, sample preparation, centrifugation and pipetting on a daily basis. Furthermore throughout my training I become competent at performing a large variety of techniques including; Immunofluorescence microscopy, gel electrophoresis, capillary zone electrophoresis, ELISA assays (automated and manual). I am familiar with using the Abbott Architect ci8200 analyser for clinical chemistry analysis and immunoassays.As part of my training I regularly reviewed case studies to ensure my understanding the role that the clinical laboratory plays in the care of patients. I developed a solid understanding of the concept of the importance of quality management systems, as to provide the best care for the service users, ranging from quality control procedures and the ability to carry out and review clinical audits

This role entails the provision of care for persons in a residential home suffering from learning disabilities and mental health illnesses. On a daily basis I am responsible for meeting the specific needs of each individual resident, whether it be assistance with personal care or support in the community. This position has highlighted my ability to use my initiative and problem solving skills in a proactive manner to help resolve any issues that may arise when working with adults that may have a learning disability or mental health illness.
