Lauren Kohn is a leading public-law scholar & legal practitioner based in South Africa. Her work focuses on administrative, constitutional, environmental & public procurement law. Lauren’s academic scholarship has been endorsed by the South African judiciary & received international recognition. She attained all her Degrees with Distinction, numerous Class Medals; and, for her LLB & LLM, was ‘Top Student’. As an academic, Lauren has won a record-breaking 5 Law Faculty Research Prizes, with the anonymous judges commending the originality, insight & rigor of her research, as well as its impact on law reform. Lauren practiced as an Attorney at Webber Wentzel for several years before joining the Academy in 2013. During her time in formal practice, Lauren became a specialist in numerous legal disciplines. She attained Distinctions for all 4 Side-Bar Exams; Top Result for ‘Court Practice’. Lauren has lectured for over a decade at UCT Law. She also continues to provide expert legal advice/ input (typically pro bono) for rights, governance and regulatory projects. In 2016, Lauren was honoured as a Dean’s Nominee for UCT’s Distinguished Teacher’s Award given her overwhelming student support & commitment to excellence in teaching, learning & scholarship. Lauren is a passionate educationalist, genuinely committed to deepening the rule of law, locally & beyond. As a mother of 4 children, she is also interested in early childhood development research & has served on a School Board. Lauren is on the editorial board of Constitutional Court Review. She is a regular media commentator & has been Key-Note speaker at numerous local & international conferences. Lauren is an inaugural recipient of a ‘Women in Law (WOZA) Award’ (for being an academic ‘thought leader and innovator’); a 2018 Winner of the ‘M&G Top 200 Young South African’ (Law & Justice) accolade; 2020 Winner of the ‘Most Inspiring50-SA Women’ (Dutch-led Initiative)& was selected as 1 of 20 ‘Influential Women Leaders’ in Africa:Leading in Public Life: Women, Influence, Power Programme. Lauren was inducted as a Young Research Fellow of UCT given the impact & quality of her scholarship. She is a ‘Vice-Chancellor’s UCT Future Leader’. Several of Lauren’s ground-breaking proposals in her PhD project(on what she calls, 'the Integrity & Accountability' fourth branch of state), funded by the OMT, are being implemented for corruption prevention & redress. Lauren is an admitted Advocate of the High Court of SA. In 2013, she co-founded the 1st-of-its-kind SA access-to-justice platform, www.SALegalAdvice.co.za.
