While attending University of Michigan Dearborn, College of Education, Health, and Human Services I was invited to travel to Reggio Emilia, Italy to study the philosophy of child directed teaching and constructivism. Reggio children demonstrated their theories and understandings of the world through diverse means of communication, including representational drawings, figurative language, photographs, music, dance, role playing, and construction of loose parts. Their learning experiences extended from the classroom and into the community. Upon displaying the richness and depth of children's thinking, the community recognized all children as creative, capable and competent individuals. When I graduated, I took on a mission to help our children be heard, not only in our schools, but in the community. In order to share the value and significance of children's learning, I needed to understand the hundred languages of children (loris malaguzzi). In 2014, I accepted an emerging art studio teacher position at UM-Early Childhood Education Center. Small groups of children explored, reflected, and constructed skills in the studio and shared their experiences with other peers in their classroom community. Children developed ways to communicate to others, which did not rely on voice alone. Art mediums enabled children's thinking to be made visible, heard, and reheard from diverse perspectives. There is such joy among the children when their ideas are expressed and more importantly heard by others. It is my ongoing commitment to this joy.

Art As Language TrainerUbuntu Communities Jan 2022 - PresentAnn Arbor, Michigan, United StatesArt is a way in which children can communicate their theories and understanding of the world around them to others. As a result of art being a powerful communication tool, we describe art as language. In the course I provide, there are 5 languages that we dive into deeply: representational drawing, painting, sculpting, loose parts, and light. These trainings are intended to inspire teachers the affordance of materials, to see possibilities and opportunities, and provide the skills to apply these strategies with children in their learning community. -
Pedagogy CoachThe U School Sep 2019 - PresentAnn Arbor, Michigan, United StatesI have the honor of working with an incredible team of brilliant early childhood educators. I serve the team by viewing lesson plans, anecdotal notes, photos, and videos. I then meet with the teaching teams bi weekly to reflect on learning in the classroom, brainstorm materials that would support the third teacher in the classroom (the classroom environment), prepare materials to be used as the third teacher, and support documentation. I also have experience supporting children with special rights. I work with teachers to reflect on observations, look for patterns, and come up with strategies to support the child, and therefore support the classroom team. -
Art TeacherThe U School Aug 2017 - PresentAnn Arbor, Michigan, United StatesThe studio is a space for children to transform their ideas into the physical world using media we describe as languages. These ideas are not only heard AND visible, but also can be a source to inspire, engage, explain, and evaluate. Children’s collaborative exchanges with others of theories, questions, and knowledge through art as language breaths life into learning. Observing the joy of learning is a privilege I get to partake in each day. -
AtelieristaEarly Childhood Education Center Jan 2014 - Sep 2014Research children's thinking process by listening to diverse possibilities of communication; including verbal dialogue, body language, facial expressions, written symbols (2D mediums), and sculptures (3D mediums).Build a community that stands on the foundation of listening and observing perspectives of human and environmental interactions. Provide meaningful materials to provoke children to create and test their theories and curiosities. Advocate early childhood education and the possibilities learning has in a constructivist learning environment by making children's thinking visible to diverse audiences.
