I opened the food pantry in an abandoned office at my church to hand out some canned and non-perishable items from the church that were going to waste. In the first month we served less than 20 people. Over the next four years I established a relationship with the Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado, Sprouts Marketplace, 7-11 and Red Lobster. We expanded our facility into a renovated set of rooms in the church and grew to feed about 150 people per week. We also offered an Angel Tree to help parents get Christmas presents for their children and Thanksgiving baskets that provided supplies for a full meal, including the turkey and pie, annually. I am pleased to report that the food pantry continues to grow under my successor, whom I trained before moving out of state. This remains one of the most rewarding experiences in my life.
