Leadership And Education In Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (Lend) Trainee
The Wisconsin Maternal and Child Health Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (WI LEND) Program is an advanced training program that provides interdisciplinary and disciplinary leadership training to trainees from across 16 disciplines. LEND's mission is to improve systems of care that promote the prevention of disabilities and assure access to family-centered, community-based services and supports for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and their families. Trainees participate in research lectures, core curriculum seminars, and case-based learning that are focused around interdisciplinary care and neurodevelopmental disabilities. Additional activities include a professional practice placement in a clinical or community setting, a research placement with Waisman Center-affiliated faculty or academic staff, and a Family Mentor placement in which trainees learn directly from families of children with a developmental disability or special health care need. Trainees also pursue leadership development through leadership skill workshops, individual mentoring from both a primary discipline mentor as well as experiential practicum preceptors and development of individualized leadership training plans.

Under the direction of Dr. Lyn Turkstra, our research lab within the Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) department looks at how traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects the social and cognitive outcomes of individuals with TBI, specifically focusing on how their communication skills are impaired. In the past, my main job was to assist a Doctoral Student in collecting data for his dissertation. In this role, I familiarized myself with research procedures, tested participants with the National Institute of Health (NIH) cognition toolbox, and administered hearing screenings.

For over two years, I held a position as a desk staffer through Residence Life of the Division of University Housing. In this time, I operated seven Residence Hall front desks by providing information and services to hundreds of residents, including offering equipment to check-out and sorting and distributing mail to residents. I have learned to resolve all issues and complaints that arise with care and critical thinking skills. I maintained professionalism on a daily basis through my communication skills and actions as a representative of University Housing.I began a leadership position in Division of University Housing - Residence life by becoming a Desk Staff Student Supervisor for the Summer of 2016, where I was in charge of managing nine staffers and the functions of a Residence Hall desk.

As President, I was responsible for organizing the events and coordinating with the executive board to execute each person's role effectively. In order to have our organization's services run smoothly, I also screened all incoming "spills" via email and acted on them appropriately within 1 hour of receiving. I collaborated with the Vice President of Financial Operations to direct the budget and annual expenditures for our promotional items, office supplies, and salaries.
Recruitment Chair
As a recruitment chair, I worked closely with the rest of the executive board to promote our organization and gain new members, or better known as Supporters. Collectively, we distributed promotional items at various events, such as the student organization fair, stress relief events on campus, and other small events that we specifically plan. I also collaborated with other recruitment chair positions in order to create marketing tools and flyers to help spread the word about our organization. These marketing tactics have led to an outstanding increase in the number of new Supporters we have received over the past year. During my time as a recruitment chair, our organization has grown by 309%. I often assisted the Vice President of Membership Development with her daily tasks by answering training related emails and holding engaging training sessions for new Supporters.I was given the honor of being appointed as President of the organization for the next academic year (2016-2017) due to my dedication and enthusiasm as part of the executive board. In addition to holding a leadership position, my general job as a SPILL Supporter entailed ensuring confidential, anonymous advice and recommending resources to peers on a variety of issues through our online support network at badgerspill.com.
