My most effective coping mechanism now involves staying exceptionally busy, channelling my energy into committed volunteer work within the charity sector. This not only enriches my own life but, hopefully, also positively impacts those I work alongside.

I am passionate about softened water and all the benefits it brings, and my commitment is to see our business and my team give Best Advice. We cover all of Kent, South East London and East Sussex, and are experienced in domestic and commercial water softeners. We service, repairs, and sell all makes and models of water treatment equipment, and do all of our own installations. I had lost everything after being made redundant from EcoWater, including my home, and I simply did not know how I was ever going to get out of the mess I was in.I received a phone call from my sister who told me about Robert, and suggested I look into mentoring with his team. So I made contact. They quoted me an eye-watering amount of money for a year's worth of coaching, and gave me very strict rules of engagement which, if I didn't adhere to them, would see the mentoring cancelled and my investment lost. I think the integrity of those rules convinced me I had to find a way to do it, and out came multiple credit cards to pay for the coaching.What I learned from Rich Dad Poor Dad was transformational for me. We were encouraged to look at creating a business, and then spent the next year training in a specific sector to give us that sector expertise (out came the credit cards again). We settled on starting a business in property investing. However, it worked, and within a year we had purchased several properties. Today, Marlau Homes holds assets in the 7-figures, which we hope offers inspiration to anybody else equally in a bad place in their lives that all they need is to have self-belief and a plan.Over the years, Marlau Homes grew to become one of the leading Yorkshire Landlords, providing professional Houses of Multiple Occupancy (HMOs) and residential buy-to-let properties to tenants. Since Brexit, we have scaled back the business and sold a couple of properties to pay off debt, and the remaining portfolio is now buy-to-let only. All profits go towards servicing our investors, and reinvesting in the properties so that our tenants have excellent-quality homes to live in. We don't draw any of the profits out for our personal use. -

Aqua-Nouveau was a large Kinetico water softener dealer.The Aquafactors business ran into difficulties in late 2008 when the Credit Crunch hit, and two weeks after I joined the business, the company received a winding up order from the Inland Revenue. An arrangement was made with its creditors to give us a period of time to turn the business around, and I was asked by the owner of the business to take the lead role in turning around the business. I left the business after two years. Three years after I left the company to join Harvey Softeners, the business was finally dissolved. - Managed the 14-member team through bankruptcy turnaround, reducing hours and removing posts to better manage costs and improve efficiency, resulting in £100,000 improvement to bottom line. - Responsible for all aspects of HR and health and safety, working closely alongside Peninsula Business Services.- Completed detailed analysis of AFD product manufacturing listings’, renegotiating purchase agreements and pricing, improving margins with an average 46% increase.- Initiated email, direct mail & telephone approaches targeted at specific sectors for both businesses.- Identified shift in AFD market and subsequently drove business direction change to incorporate increased route-to-market strategy through distribution, plus identified additional product lines to drive growth in sales to the UK janitorial cleaning sector.- Worked closely with the UKTI to develop an AFD export strategy to enable the company to properly identify foreign distributors and to put in place relevant measures to ensure that export targets are set.- Introduced new ways of working to drive focus reducing triplication, increasing bottom line practices and cutting discounting for both businesses. -
