I have always been inspired by the way that software can change the world for the better, and I have been fortunate enough to work for several organisations that have shared this inspiration. From building software to leading or coaching teams, I am at my best when I am working with people who are driven by a clear mission to bring improvement.Agile methods are ideal for software development teams that want to deliver valuable software efficiently and effectively. My work is all about helping these teams to get the most from Agile whilst avoiding distractions and over-complication.Over the last decade I have brought positive Agile change and improved flow of value to over 10 software development teams in three very different organisations, each with their own distinct challenges and cultures. Some teams were seeking to take Agile to the next level; others were completely new to it.I build safety, respect, and trust within my teams. I nurture healthy working environments where people feel safe to surface differing views and are able to ask for help or admit failure without fear of criticism. At Anglian Water I achieved this by shifting decision-making into the hands of the development teams, giving them ownership of the Kanban method they wanted to adopt.I act as a change agent across the organisations I work in, inspiring people to rally to a shared cause and become change agents themselves. At Secondmind I established a "Don't moan about change, be part of it" attitude with a Change Agents group that was empowered to make kaizen improvements across the company. This approach established Scrum more firmly than any top-down transformation programme would have done.I have learned that people and purpose matter above all else. When motivated people are brought together around a common purpose, they can solve problems that have defeated others and build products that change the world for the better.
