About Laurence Wayne
Following an undergraduate degree of Geophysics with Geology at Durham University, I then stayed on for a Master's in 'Scientific Computing and Data Analysis'. Key topics of this course include: Machine Learning, Big Data Processing and Advanced Algorithm Engineering. My dissertation topic was centred around Climate Change and involved use of ML, Complex Algorithms and Statistics to explore large climate data sets to quantify localisation of where the climate is changing fastest in the British Isles. (Spoilers: Urban areas are actively heating up fastest, whereas woodland and bogs are actively cooling the surrounding area...).Outside of work, I have a particular interests in projects that drive positive environmental change. Summer 2018 I worked on the ‘Cambridge Carbon Map’ (https://cambridgecarbonmap.org/). Working in a team with science and computing students from Cambridge University I helped to develop and code the project website and worked on back-end statistics & infrastructure to analyse carbon emissions by companies in the city. I have also held positions such as my University’s Publicity Officer for the International “Geology for Global Development” organisation and initiative.To develop my broader skillset, I have taken on other extra-curricular responsibilities. I was Treasurer for the University’s geological society for two years - handling a significant budget and large database of current and alumni Members. Also, last year I was elected President of the Post Graduate Society in Grey College here at Durham. I chaired committee meetings, organise student events and sit on the Trustee Board of the College. These extracurricular roles have given me valuable team leading, collaborative working, organisational and budgeting experience. Following university, I have taken on a position in the Data Science team in BT Security to learn more about a new field, namely cyber security. This position also allows me to develop my data science & mathematical ability to an industry leading standard, whilst engaging with key stakeholders to the company. This enables insight to what problems they face and how I can help solve them.

Elected MCR (Middle Common Room) President for Grey College JCR this year, I am responsible for liaison with college staff, independently run student events and handling much of the admin work. As a senior student role within college, I also sit on the trustee board of Grey College. This role is very busy but is challenging and rewarding, and I am learning.
