The EU Taxonomy is implemented as part of the European Green Deal setting out the objectives to achieve a carbon neutral economy by 2050 in line with the Paris Agreement goals. The Taxonomy is a classification system established to clarify which investments are environmentally sustainable in the context of the Green Deal. The aim of the taxonomy is to prevent greenwashing and to help investors make greener choices. Investments are judged by six environmental objectives: climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation, the circular economy, pollution, effect on water, and biodiversity. The CSRD directive requires companies to collect, process and publish a huge amount of ESG data and information; this requires new systems, processes and a governance structure to be put in place. The directive also requires an external auditor to provide assurance on sustainability reporting.(as for financial reporting).
