For the first 8 years of my 30+year career, I worked on the front lines in the helping profession from Case Aid to Case Manager. The skills I learned and the talents that were strengthened during my pursuit for my Master’s degree in Counseling at Georgia Southern University enabled me to successfully serve the hardest to serve individuals in my community; the homeless with substance abuse, mental health, and co-occurring disorders. As my career moved from direct service to administration I have seen that the same skills that aided me with the success of the clients I served are now used to aid me in the management and coordination of the staff I supervise and my collaborative partner relationships. As an Executive Director for a not-for-profit organization, there is little room for error and no time for revisions. I have learned to maximize my time and expedite the completion of my tasks. My coursework exposed me to theories and strategies that have proven valuable in my career as well as my personal development. This is also true of the skills required to work full time and successfully complete graduate coursework while raising two boys on my own. I have learned to simultaneously perform the many tasks of my job. My confidence has increased and I am more self-assured than ever before. Branching out into private consulting has given me an even greater sense of the need for empowering and transforming not only individuals but teams and organizations as well. As a consultant, my goal is to equip staff/teams with the tools necessary to confidently, energetically and enthusiastically approach their work. I strive to take the mystery out of strategic planning, accreditation procedures, and contract compliance so that managers and leaders have the structure and systems required to successfully manage through organization development, expansion and/or systemic changes.
