Experienced university professor and Head of Department/Head of School with ten years experience of managing multidisciplinary departments. I am the author or editor of six books as well as two special journal issues and numerous peer-reviewed chapters and essays. My research interests tend to focus in three areas: firstly and pre-eminently culture and space especially the literary representation of cities and the urban; secondly Victorian and early twentieth-century Empire writing; and, finally, post-war and contemporary British fiction. My most recent major publications include the monograph The South Pacific Narratives of Robert Louis Stevenson and Jack London (Continuum/Bloomsbury 2012), an edited collection (with Sonya Andermahr) Angela Carter: New Critical Readings (Continuum/Bloomsbury 2012); and another collection (with Anne Witchard) London Gothic: Space, Place and the Gothic Imagination (Continuum 2010).
