Profile bio

About Lawrence Smith

I'm a recently minted PhD and mechanical engineer with ten years of experience, actively looking to change the way we practice mechanical design in industry. I am well familiar with the shortcomings of traditional design workflows: underutilization of numerical simulation, bottlenecks between design ideation and evaluation, and incompatibility with additive fabrication technologies. These disproportionately impact tomorrow's design problems: those which require novel, complex, multi-domain solutions! To discover these solutions, we must completely re-think the way we practice design. My research focuses on accelerating numerical simulation of complex structural mechanics phenomena to enable automated design - the concept of imbuing algorithms with mechanical design capabilities. I have published research in automated design synthesis, numerical simulation using finite elements, and 3D printing of medical models for surgical planning.I worked part-time as an independent contractor while pursuing my graduate degrees, allowing my to keep my finger on the cutting edge of industry. As a numerical modeling specialist, I have performed complex analyses of miniature drug delivery systems, injection systems, and valve mechanisms and communicated key results to clients in the US and abroad.I specialize in numerical simulation using finite elements (Abaqus, Ansys, Solidworks Simulation, FEnics, FEBio, and Simulink), especially integrating those simulations into scripted workflows; mechanical design (Solidworks, Pro-E, Fusion 360, Inventor), especially design for additive manufacturing; and technical communication. I'm actively looking for a role that puts these skills to use - please send me a message if you'd like to chat about my research, the future of mechanical design, or employment opportunities!

Listed skills include Solidworks, Matlab, Teaching, Finite Element Analysis, and 5 others.
