Lawrence Schäfer has a commercial practice, with a specific focus on technology, mining, insurance, banking, construction, and shareholder disputes. Industry-specific experience includes e-tolling, last-mile fibre, concentrating solar-thermal power, Johannesburg Stock Exchange listing requirements, and various aspects of mining (most notably coal). He has been instructed in relation to litigation in various South African courts and in England and the British Virgin Islands, and in domestic and international commercial arbitrations. He sits as an arbitrator and adjudicator, and is a past Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in South Africa. Before joining the Bar, Lawrence taught for two colleges of the University of Oxford and was an academic post-holder at two other British Universities. He taught on an ad hoc basis in Istanbul, Beirut and Moscow, and held consultancies for the National Democratic Institute (Washington D.C.) and the International Development Law Organisation (Rome). He sits as an arbitrator and adjudicator and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Fellow of the Association of Arbitrators (Southern Africa), and a Member of the General Commercial Panel of the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa. He is a member of the Approved Faculty List of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and, in this capacity, taught on a number of courses in South Africa, Zambia and Mauritius. He is a past Chairman of the South African Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the African Journal on Arbitration (LexisNexis). Lawrence read law at the University of Oxford, Rhodes University, The Hague Academy of International Law and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Before joining the Johannesburg Bar, he held academic posts at two British Universities and taught for two colleges of the University of Oxford. As a visiting lecturer, he presented lectures or short courses at universities in Russia, Bulgaria, Turkey and South Sudan, at the Judicial Institute of Jordan, and at the Istanbul and Beirut Bar Associations. Since 2011, he has twice been retained as a consultant by the National Democratic Institute (Washington D.C.) and once by the International Development Law Organisation (Rome).
